The night was dark and the moonlight was
obscured by clouds. Below were the
dockyards lit by mercury vapor lamps and the headlights on forklifts. Men were yelling and moving about. A young woman and three men approached the
dock master. The young woman wore a navy-blue
business suit and had brunette hair up in buns on either side of her head. She held up a badge and spoke. “Hong Kong Interpol division. I have questions. I’m officer Chun-Li we’re on an
investigation.” “I’m not sure what you
could want at the dockyard Miss we just move and ship things. We see only crates and boxes.” “We’re investigating the criminal
organization Shadaloo and their connection to another group. May we see your shipping manifests for the
last few months?”
She walked into the exquisite dining
establishment, her pink, brown and white hair shrouded her face like a hood on
a deadly cobra. Just by the manner in
which she carried herself she seemed to be a woman not to be trifled with. Her attire was a form fitting body suit of
grey, white, and gold. The host at the
door tried to tell her she didn’t meet the place’s dress code for female
clientele. She bull rushed him, pinned
him to a wall by her forearm and quietly whispered. “Where is Edgar G. Robinson? The Songbird would have words with him.” “Third table in the back on your left.” “Good send a waiter to me with a V8 energy
black cherry in flavor.” “We don’t serve
that here Ma’am.” “You do now send
someone to get it because I just ordered it.
I’m a superhero and a former pro-wrestler my bad side is not where you
want to be.” “Will do Ma’am. Alfonso go get the lady her drink.” Melissa Gold aka Songbird continued through
the establishment unhindered. She
approached the table of Mr. Robinson.
“Mr. Robinson we can either let you finish your meal in peace, or I can
ask questions the hard way.” Two guards
near him pulled guns. Songbird made a
noise and pink light took the guns from their hands disassembled them in pink bubbles
in the air and deposited them in the nearest busboy’s tray. “Sit down and don’t move!” “What can I do for you Songbird?” “Shadaloo how are you connected?” One of the guards moved again toward
her. “Ooooh.” Knives of pink sonic energy pinned his hands
to the wall behind the table. “Tell your
guards to behave I can do this all day both physically and with sonics I can
put all of three of you in pain you can’t begin to imagine.” A waiter appeared behind Songbird to her
right. “Miss, I have your black cherry
V8 energy for you.” “Thank you, Alfonso. Now I’m going to enjoy my drink Mr. Robinson
while you answer my question.”
The day was beautiful but the young lady
in the golf cart was not in the best of moods.
She had been with this group for hours riding around. Being a lawyer had its perks but seriously
playing rounds of golf with rich stuck-up snobs was not one of them. She honestly didn’t know how much more she
could take before her skin color changed and she smashed something. Jennifer Walters patience was wearing
thin. She had been asked by her law firm
to get information from a client about his criminal ties to a strange group
called Shadaloo, but the man insisted on her meeting him at his weekly golf game,
and he had talked more to his caddie than her.
She was a lawyer and a dang good one, but she was very close to being
angry. Years ago, Jennifer was given a
blood transfusion by her cousin after being shot by a gangster. That was all fine and dandy and it saved her life,
but Jennifer’s cousin just happened to be Robert David Bruce Banner the same
person that turned into the Incredible Hulk.
One life saving act changed Jennifer for life to an occasional darker
green shade of melanin. She could change
at will into a super strong, intelligent, seven-foot jade giantess known as
She-Hulk. As Bruce had told Mr. McGee
for years, this Garbanzo Golfer was not going to like her when she was
angry.
Something was off and looking at the St.
Roch Museum displays she wasn't visually picking up on it. but she knew there
had been other items in a few of the displays she was near. She took her cell phone and began snapping
pictures, a lot of them. When she was
sure she had had enough she opened her e-mail and attached the pictures. She sent the e-mail to Patsy Walker, her
friend at Jessica Drew investigations.
Patsy was a private investigator and former hero named Hellcat but had a
penchant for mystical and arcane objects.
She could help her pinpoint what was missing. She then placed a call to Lori, her museum
importer and exporter. If anyone could
help Kendra it was Lori. "Lori this
is Kendra there seems to be something missing from the displays out here have
we sent anything to other locations in the state?" "Gimme about a day Kendra and I will research
this." "Thanks Bye." Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl/museum curator,
then went to the museum directory to find the security office’s phone
number. Finding the number, she
called. "Security officer Phillip
how can I help you?" Phillip you're
the tall African American man who greets me each morning offering doughnuts is
that correct?" "Yes Ms.
Saunders I am." Phillip, I have a
favor to ask can you get me video footage of wings F-D the arcane objects
display for the past week. I don't think
anything was stolen but something about the displays is off and at the moment I
can't quite place it." You got it
Ms Saunders might take an hour or more to get all the files on to a disc for
you." "Thank you so much
Phillip and you can call me Kendra. By
the way I prefer apple fritters and cinnamon twists." "Yes Ms. Saunders, I mean
Kendra."
Right hook left Jab. Glass shattered for a whole city block. She didn't mean to be causing this much
damage but that's the way the day seemed to have started. She had left a board meeting at Starrware
Enterprises when the ground began shaking and steam shot up from the
sewer! Something that was underground
had made its way up to the surface.
That's how it all started. She
took another kick to her right thigh then ducked a manhole cover thrown like a
frisbee. She was in a fight, but Power
Girl was no pushover. Karen was going to
put a stop to these two behemoths. The
one covered in gray with the horn called himself Rhino and tried to bum rush
her but she moved, and he hit a motorcycle.
Boom! The motorcycle exploded.
Power Girl landed and was about to take a step and then Katang!!!!! She was speared about the midsection by the
red giant calling himself Juggernaut!
She returned the blow with a double axe handle and tried for a front
face lock, but his head covered in that helmet was much too big. She continued struggling to get free as their
momentum carried them through three now collapsing buildings. Then he bellowed. "Nothing stops the
Juggernaut!" As they went through a
cement pillar, she was able to wiggle free and fly. "Nothing? Really? I'm the most stubborn hero you've ever met
Challenge Accepted Big Boy!" Power
Girl tapped her earpiece and said, "JLA Watchtower K. Starr backup request
ALPHA DELTA 19 EPSILON security clearance." "Power Gil this is Hope is there anyone
in particular you would like for backup, or do you want me to pick
someone?" "Hawkgirl please
tell her to get to her Hawk's Nest gear up and teleport to my
location." Copy that request granted."
Kendra had just left her meeting with
Phillip when her phone lit up with a request from the JLA Watchtower. She ran to the nearest stairwell taking steps
in leaps, at the basement she twisted the arm of the statue of Horus and a
secret door opened to Hawk’s Nest her own private lair as Hawkgirl. She grabbed her wing harness and strapped it
on. She then belted on a dagger and a
sword. Lastly, she picked up her
mace. With her mace and wing harness she
felt a familiar pleasant throb of power as her body surged from the Nth
metal. "JLA Watchtower awaiting
teleportation." "Confirmed in
4 3 2 1." The air turned aqua and
shimmered and suddenly Hawkgirl was gone.
Three days prior to Power Girl and
Hawkgirl’s encounter downtown Patsy Walker had been contacted by Chun-Li Zang about
a situation involving a hush hush organization called Shadaloo. She and Jessica Drew had pressing matters, so
she had contacted Greer Nelson. Then
Kendra mentioned the missing arcane artifacts days later so she passed on the
info to Greer as a side project. Greer
Nelson stood 5 foot 10 inches tall and weighed 180 lbs. She was a former West Coast Avenger member in
her superheroine persona of Tigra the Were Cat.
In her human form, she had black hair.
When she called on the power of her amulet she became Tigra the Were Cat
a creature that was half human and half cat with enhanced strength, slashing
claws, and a heightened sense of smell, vision and hearing. As, Tigra she had orange fur and black
stripes and fought in a black bikini.
She was a former Avenger, policewoman and Avengers Academy trainer. If Patsy and Jessica asked her for help, she
could take care of herself.
As Power Girl and Hawkgirl were trying to
handle things downtown Greer was dismounting her Honda Elite Motor scooter
about 10 miles away about go to question her usual informants at Mallory’s Bar
and Grill. Greer dismounted her off
white motor scooter and lifted her seat to secure her helmet. Mallory, the owner and bartender was a
longtime friend. A former Hooters girl
who had levelled up in the world to have her own place of business. She worked out often and tended to handle
physical altercations when needed. Greer
opened the door and was greeted by Birdie, the resident bouncer. The music was loud, there was a hustle and
bustle of noise but the place for a bar was very upscale and clean. She made her way through the maze of people
and tables. Mallory had her back to the
bar and was cleaning glasses when she looked up into the mirror in front of
her. “Hey, Were-Cat, good to see you
again.” Greer smiled and waited for her
friend to turn around. “How’s it going
Mallory?” “Fairly busy today. Got a lot of weird clientele. Social visit or do you need info today?” “Virgin Pina colada please and yes I need
info.” “What kind?” “Well, I’ve been sent to investigate missing
arcane objects by one client and a mysterious group called Shadoloo.” “While I fix your drink then I suggest you go
to this table.” Mallory pulled a seating
chart from under the bar and quietly pointed out table 12B. “Four guys, red coats, green mohawks?” “Exactly.”
Greer walked three tables away from the bar and introduced herself to
the guys. Immediately her years of being
a policewoman and Avengers training kicked in.
She started watching body language and asked a multitude of
questions. Two tables over a beer glass
went flying and hit one of the patrons she was talking to in the forehead. That’s how the fight erupted. The group at the table between the ones who
had thrown the offending glass ran to the bar paid their tab and left. The patrons of both tables began throwing
food and drinks then combatants locked up and blows began being exchanged. Birdie waded in using his massive 300 lbs
body to shield Greer and get her out of the way as the fight ensued.
Greer stood passively by the bar now
watching. Birdie went back in and tried
to calm things. “Mallory, how long are
you going to let them fight?” “Haven’t
quite decided. You want to unleash that
Were-Cat spirit and have a workout.?”
“Not sure if it’s even worth it yet.”
Five more minutes passed, and Greer was casually watching and sipping
her Pina Colada. Birdie had subdued two
men by slamming their heads on the oak tables.
Suddenly and without any warning whatsoever, the man who had been hit by
the glass that started the whole ruckus began waving his arms and the air in
the building grew hot, and a fireball flew from his hands towards the offending
glass thrower. The target ducked. The fireball continued to fly and struck
Mallory in the chest full on. Greer was
in shock. All noise in the bar and grill
came to a halt. In Greer’s mind she kept
replaying that one line from the movie Desperado “The bartender never gets
killed.” But here was her friend getting
shot in the chest with a krutacking fireball!
BOOM! Down to the floor behind
the bar Mallory fell. Greer’s Avengers
training kicked in and she began to scramble for cover. She was about to grab her amulet and change
into Tigra when a strange color caught her eyes. “Assess the situation, seek cover, help the
wounded and respond.” Captain America’s
training flooded her brain. She
scrambled around the bar as the fight continued in earnest. She found Mallory on the floor. Strange symbols were forming on Mallory’s
arms in patterns then they began to glow and azure color. Mallory sat up like the WWE superstar The
Undertaker. Greer was stunned! Mallory vaulted over the bar and half flew at
the man who had shot her with a fireball.
Azure wings momentarily sprang from her back. Birdie ducked. Azure and lime green color flowed from her
arms and pinned the man to the wall.
Greer vaulted the bar and in mid-air transformed into Tigra. She didn’t know what just happened to
Mallory, but it appeared “Business was about to pick up.” Mallory spoke and her voice now carried an
ethereal quality to it. “Nobody shoots
the bartender! Who are you?” “Shadaloo will rule all!”, he screamed. When Tigra spoke, there was always a throaty
growl to it. Tigra casually walked
over. “Mal, you alright?” “I’m cool Tigra, but if you have questions I
think we rooted out the right guy.”
“What is Shadaloo?” “We are
everywhere.” “Yeah, been there done
that. Hydra already beat you to all the
cool catch phrases.” As Mallory held the
man in her azure bonds Tigra slowly reached closer to the man’s face with her
claws. “Answer the questions! Growl Who are you? How do we find Shadaloo and what is it? I’m about to stop asking nicely.”
Meanwhile several thousand miles away on
the opposite side of the globe, Chun-Li was going through shipping manifests by
the dockyard. Using her cell phone, she
was snapping and sending multiple pictures to her computer expert Sakura. One of her fellow officers grabbed her arm
and silently pointed to a shadowy corner between stacks of boxes. For all intents and purposes Chun-Li found
herself looking at a real-life ninja.
She knew from case files this man was not supposed to even exist. He was spoken of in whispers in the martial
arts and law enforcement communities. It
was rumored that he was a member of a special military group codenamed: Delta
or G.I.Joe. He was covered head to toe
in black and had an emblem on the right shoulder in bright red. Her sensei had mentioned this one in passing. Two broken lines over one long, then two more
broken, another full line and two more broken.
She was looking at the symbol of the Arishikage ninja clan. He stood with a bandolier of grenades, an uzi
on a strap and two swords sheathed to his back.
He unleashed two throwing stars and two men in red coats fell crashing
from overhead crates to the ground. He
flipped of the crates he was on and landed in front of Chun-Li and pointed at
her phone then rapidly typed into a device on his wrist. Her cell phone made noise. “I am Snake Eyes of the G.I.Joe team. I am mute, long story, your questions and my
actions have upset the underworld group called Shadaloo. You are not alone in your search. Call the number I’m about to give you. Tell Hope to review notes from Lady Jaye and
mention these names: Jennifer Walters, Karen Starr, Kendra Saunders, Melissa
Gold, and Greer Nelson. You will receive
further info.” He then signed the words
in sign language, “I trust you that is why you have been allowed to see
me.” Snake Eyes then took a running leap and
vanished from her sight. Chun-Li and
Officer Hammond looked at one another and both mouthed the words. “Did that just happen?”
Hope sat at the Watchtower communications
console and suddenly there was a ding and a folder appeared on her computer
screen. “That wasn’t there before!” she
exclaimed. It read Project
Dragonbait. She opened the file and
called Mr. Terrific from the Watchtower monitor post. He pulled up a chair next to her. The file opened a document that read as
follows. “Project Dragonbait: This is an
interconnected web of details and files on an organization called Shadaloo a
criminal group seeking arcane objects.
The purpose as of yet is unknown.
Various super powered agents have started looking into these activities
give them all the help and full cooperation they request per Lady Jaye head of intelligence
of Team Delta. Authorized by the
President of the United States.” Mr.
Terrific patted Hope on the shoulder after she finished reading aloud. “Congratulations
Hope, you just got your first communications top priority mission. Don’t worry about handling anything else I’m
assigning you a Star Labs team to help you with anything you may need as you
work on this.” He pointed to an icon on
her screen. “Remember your training when
we told you only a few communications agents ever get to use that icon? Well go for it young lady activate Agents P
and L.
Lori was busy researching the files and
pictures sent to her by Kendra when her phone rang again. “This is Lori.” Hope spoke into her headset. “Agent L this is Officer Hope with the
Justice League Watchtower you’ve been activated to an Intelligence Level
Agent. The info you need for your case
will be sent to you.” Lori got off the
phone and a file called Project Dragonbait was sent to her in a secure
text. A matching list of pictures and
objects suddenly popped up to next to what she had been working on for Kendra
and in the bottom of one list it said.
“Information provided by Dr. Stephen Strange and Zatanna Zatara.” She sat stunned by the names of Dr. Strange
and Zatanna the Mistress of Magic. “Whoa
I’ve gotta contact Kendra this stuff is crazy.”
Lori exclaimed.
For all intents and purposes Agent P or
Phillip the upscale security guard at St Roch Museum appeared to be nothing
more than a lowly guard. That was his
cover it was what he was supposed to look like.
He had known for months that Kendra was actually the superheroine
Hawkgirl of the Justice League and Justice Society fame and she hadn’t even
told him yet. He had been recruited by
Team Delta on a probationary basis to keep tabs on her. But before he was told who she was he had
pieced it together. He had deduced the
blind spots on the video cameras near the statue of Horus and seen her open the
room to her Hawk’s Nest. Then one night
after his shift he saw the roof open and she flew out. When Hope activated Agent P he almost fell
over laughing because he was sent a short video clip from the cartoon Phineas
and Ferb. Instead of Major Monogram it
showed a short clip of Mister Terrific telling Perry the Platypus all the
mission details. Now as an active agent
he had all authority to help Hawkgirl in every way she needed. He could reveal his presence to her.
Jennifer was tired of waiting for answers from
the golfer and was seconds away from tearing up her business attire, when her
phone saved her from flipping the golf cart and making the golfer and his
caddie wear multiple golf clubs around their anatomies. She got a text from Hope about Project
Dragonbait.
Lori and Phillip from different locations
were scrambling trying to contact Kendra not realizing how bad of a fight she
had just teleported into to assist Power Girl.
Hawkgirl was about to land on a city street when an orange truck flew
by. She had time to duck and somewhat
slow it with her mace. The truck
collided with a tall white building and the Rhino charged at Hawkgirl. Catching movement out of the corner of her
eye slits on her mask, Kendra swung her mace upwards and to the right. KATANG!
For half a second The Rhino went head over heels backwards, skidding down
the narrow sidewalk tearing up chunks of cement. He snagged a stop sign on his trajectory and
swung himself back up to a standing position.
“Karabast!” exclaimed Kendra. The
Rhino stomped and prepared for another charge at her and bellowed in rage.
Miles away the tremors of the battle
involving Power Girl and Hawkgirl were beginning to affect the landscape. Power Girl twisted and avoided Juggernaut’s
latest charge and was able to get airborne.
She peppered the red behemoth with heat vision trying to stop him but
only succeeded in pushing him underground.
Hawkgirl frantically called her on her earpiece. “Pee Gee we need to end this fight there’s
too much property damage.” “I agree Hawkgirl,
but we can’t do it alone.” “JLA
Watchtower this is Power Girl requesting more backup. Send help” “JLA responding this is Mr.
Terrific. Help is enroute as soon as we
locate nearby heroes.” The ground shook
again as Juggernaut emerged from the sewer.
Karen looked down she was bleeding from a cut on her rib cage. It had been years since she had lost blood
from any wound. She was Kryptonian and
the yellow sun powered her the same way it did her cousin Superman. She watched the sir around Juggernaut
shimmer. She tried X-Ray vision and
couldn’t penetrate what was around him.
It wasn’t lead but her heat vision hadn’t hurt him much at all. She tapped her earpiece. “Kendra, I’m fighting a monster powered by
magic. We need to switch dance partners
and fast! He’s making me bleed.” “I can’t leave this Rhino alone destroying
property. As soon as we have some form
of backup, I’ll be there. Stay airborne,
let the sun heal you. Use your heat
vision to slow him. Don’t fight stubborn
Be tactical!”
Twenty miles to the west Songbird had just
exited the restaurant where she had learned something of Shadaloo
activities. But being able to make use
that info would have to wait. Glass
began to break and rain down around her and the people on the sidewalk. She wasn’t the biggest heroine on the block,
but she could make a difference. She
glanced up and threw her jacket off. “Whatever’s going on that’s not good.” She spread her arms out and made a small
noise and pink wings appeared at the edges of her costume. Then she let out a scream that manifested a
pink awning to cover the people running from the glass. The more she screamed the more people it
protected. She wedged it between as many
buildings as she could till it solidified as a hard light sonic construct. When they looked up, she continued the scream
going airborne and with her right hand she pointed to safety. With her left hand she thumbed her Avengers/
Thunderbolts distress beacon.
Jennifer was reading the details of
Project Dragonbait when her Avengers ID Card’s emergency beacon went off. T gave Songbird’s location and a small video
of what she was dealing with. “Aw, Man I
really liked this business suit.” She
had a custom-made bodysuit that expanded when she hulked out, but her day-to-day
clothes didn’t really survive the transformations. The golf caddie said, “Were you talking to me
ma’am?” Suddenly the entire golf cart
shifted in weight and tilted to the side Jennifer had been previously sitting
on. The demure looking brunette was gone. He glanced back and his jaw dropped when he
saw a 7 foot tall 500 lbs muscular jade giantess grab the golf cart with one
hand and flip it over with him in it just because she could. As she leapt away she yelled “Golf is
freaking boring!”
Meanwhile at a mountain range in Thailand,
the dictator and leader of Shadaloo, General M. Bison sits observing the battle
taking place with Hawkgirl and Power Girl.
He activated the intercom on his throne chair. “Colonel Vega, I like how this blonde female
is hurting. Send more psycho power to
the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak encasing Juggernaut’s helmet. Make him insane with power. I want more property damage!” “By your command sir. Anything else sir?” “Send Shadaloo Raiders from the nearby
area. Create as much chaos as you can.” “It will be done sir.” General Bison was a man corrupted by evil, he
enjoyed the pain of others. As
Juggernaut became more enraged by the Psycho Power the throne room became
filled with the cackling laughter from General Bison.
Suddenly Tigra’s Avengers id card began
beeping. Mallory looked at her and they
both could feel the trembling of the ground.
Tigra said, “Rhino and Juggernaut are tearing up the city, I have to go
help.” “Not alone you’re not. Bring your scooter in the building. Birdie, as soon as she’s back inside secure
it all and get the wait staff and cooks to safety. Werecat, these wings aren’t for show. I’ve had training since I last saw you. I’ll do anything to protect my city and my
son. Get ready to fly.”
Tabitha Smith had just finished her chili cheese bacon fries and lemonade from Charley’s Philly Cheese Steaks when her cell phone began buzzing. It went directly to a face time video chat from her best friend Lorna Dane. “Tabby, go to the bathroom nearest you and change into your costume!” “Whoa! Lorna slow down what are you yammering about my green haired friend?” “It’s all over the news and the superhero apps if you stopped playing Angry Birds long enough you would have known. I’ll meet you outside the food court shortly. Juggernaut and Rhino and armored goons are everywhere! It’s time for Polaris and Meltdown to scramble and help the other heroes.” “You got it Dudette! 100% Stratusfaction guaranteed.” Tabitha grabbed her pink and yellow backpack and ran to the food court restrooms. Moments later she emerged wearing a yellow and blue costume and a purple visor. The food court was filled with so many people glued to the tv no one even gave her a sideways glance. The mall valet attendant walked up to her and asked. “Which car was yours ma’am?” “I’ll be back this evening. Don’t worry about it. She pointed upward giggled and said. “There’s my ride.” The valet looked up in shock as Tabitha was pulled airborne by a green braided woman wearing an all green costume. Meltdown tapped her earpiece and told Polaris, “I love leaving that look on people’s faces when you use your powers of magnetism to make me levitate.” “All part of the superheroine fun my explosive friend.”
